AAI has assisted NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) in several of their mining research efforts. AAI provided the programming for the STOP program (Support Technology Optimization Program). STOP includes a database of commercially available standing supports (cans, cribs, and roof props), and allows the user to compare the support capacities of different systems and different configurations. AAI has also provided NIOSH with an overview of ground support strategies for dealing with bump-prone conditions in the Western U.S., and has assisted NIOSH in in-mine instrumentation efforts for deep cover longwall mining.
